Edmonton Water Softener Installation and Repair Services

Are there spots on your dishes and glasses when you pull them out of the dishwasher? Do your clothes seem stained, dingy, or dull, even after a good wash? Are you having trouble getting a good lather going when you’re in the shower? Chances are, you have hard water.

What is hard water?

Hard water refers to the high levels of mineral content, particularly magnesium and calcium, in your water. This happens when water that’s in the ground collects soluble minerals found in the earth. Besides the previously mentioned problems, hard water can also:

  • Leave soap scum on bathroom fixtures, showers, and bathtubs
  • Reduce the efficiency of your water heater
  • Damage your appliances
  • Cause a mineral build-up in your pipes
  • Leave your skin dry and itchy

Water Softener Installation

The most common way to get rid of hard water in your home is by connecting a water softener directly to your water supply line. This unit typically uses an ion exchange system, meaning that it switches the minerals in hard water for something else. In this case, a water softener swaps hardness ions like calcium and magnesium for salt ions, such as sodium and potassium.

The system will continue to soften the water until the beads are completely saturated by the minerals. Once this happens, the system performs a regeneration cycle, which basically restores the charge in the resin beads. At this point, salt is added to a separate tank to create a brine solution. This mixture of salt and water flows into the water softener where it rinses the beads. This allows the brine solution to remove the build-up of hard water minerals by replacing them with fresh sodium. The brine solution, calcium, and magnesium are then flushed down a drain and the resin beads are once again ready for action.
